In mystery books and movies, fingerprints play a big role.
Police get them from a gun left by the thief.
Then, soon, the thief is in jail.
But in real life, police rarely get prints from guns.
First of all, a smart thief won't  leave his gun where it can be found.
And, even if he did, the gun doesn't have good prints.
That is because it is usually oily.
Finally, anyone who fires a gun holding it tightly.
That also blurs the prints.
So real-life detectives have to find other kinds of clues.




In Europe during the Middle Ages, when a king issued an order, the paper on which the
order was written had to be marked in some way that told everyone, "The king really said
this!"   The king could just sign his name to the paper, but then someone else might
imitate the king's signature on it.  So official papers had to be marked in some special way
to prevent false documents.  One way would be to put a drop of hot wax on the paper.
Then the king could press his ring into the wax.  The desine was called the king's seal.
Nobody had a ring just like the king's.  So any paper with the king's seal on it could be
believed to be genuine.

So any paper with the king's seal on it could be believed to be genuine.

그래서 왕의 봉인이 있는 어떤 문서든 진짜라고 믿겨졌다.
