Older people may find comfort in the thought that their siblings can help them. Rarely, though, do they call each other for help or offer each other instrumental support, such as loaning money. Psychologists believe that there are several reasons siblings don't turn to each other for instrumental help. First, since they are usually about the same age, they may be equally needy or weak. Another reason is that many people consider their siblings safety nets, the last resort, turning to a son or daughter first. It is more acceptable in our society to look up or down the family ladder for help than sideways.
