I am a Korean-Canadian living in <ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Toronto</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY>, exactly in <ST1:PLACE><ST1:CITY>Richmond Hill</ST1:CITY>, <ST1:STATE>Ontario</ST1:STATE></ST1:PLACE>. My daughter has been skating since Grade 2 (I admit that she is not another Yuna Kim at all though). According to my experience, coaches teach many students. They give an invoice regularly showing hours they have spent for a student and their hourly rate. Needless to say, the mor experienced and popular a coach is, the higher is the hourly rate.  Neither a student nor parents try to argue or negotiate about the rate. Parents are supposed to pay the invoice as is billed by a coach.

My daughter's coach who is a man charges $60 per hour. My daughter's home club is Richmond Training Centre in <ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Richmond Hill</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY> located in the north of <ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Toronto</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY>. The coach charges not only the hours he has spent for regular lessons but also the time he spends on partnering with my daughter for dance tests. He also charges the time he spends to be with my daughter in skating competitions. It is a common rule that parents pay whatever a coach charges. A contract between a student and a coach? Are you kidding? It simply doesn't exist.

I know that I can't compare Yuna wih my daughter and Orser with my daughter's coach. But it is true that Orser was famous as a skater long time ago, but he is pretty new as a coach. Considering this, I believe that Orser's hourly rate is not that low. And I also believe that Orser did not forget to charge Yuna for the time he spent for her in many competitions for years. If he didn't, I guess that he was either stupid or he was sure to enjoy a lot more benefits than he would receive through regular bills. As a matter of fact, it is Orser who became famous as a coach because of Yuna, not vice-and-versa. He also must have received considerable benefits through his appearances in TV commercials. (He has received or will receive prize money from the Korean government and other monetary benefits from various sources according to news.)

Orser has coached many skaters, while it is true that Yuna has become the most important one only because of her performance and achievements that no other skaters on the earth can duplicate for the next decades. That is why Orser sounds totally non-sense when he says, "I received just $xxx per hour from Yuna," "I have never received any bonuses," or "This is not a matter of money but trust," and so on. For this reason, I have no hesitation to call him a downright coward who juggles with mass media. (For the ice show for which he claimed he was not paid, I think that Orser was there as a skater to perform with Yuna, not as her coach. He skated there. Did he do that for free at all? Why should Yuna pay him?)

Some argue that Yuna just dumped Orser because she achieved all what she wanted. I would say that such as argument results from utter ignorance of the whole facts and situation. Because, if it had not been for Yuna, we could have not had the honour of enjoying such gorgeous and elegant skating performances at all, while it is true that Orser played an important role for such unprecedented success of Yuna as a skater.  Can you think that Orser can make my daughter a skater like Yuna? (Sorry, Jessie.) Orser has to be more grateful to Yuna and her family that he could have a chance to coach Yuna who has the talent, passion, challenging spirit, and the courage. It cannot be too much for him to thank Yuna and her family for the rest of his life although he did that before. I would try to understand Orser in the sense that his career as a coach is not long enough such that he does not know what to do as a coach when dealing with this kind of delicate situation involving one of the most influential celebrities in the world and the world champion who had started her journey with Orser as one of his ordinary junior skaters several years ago.

Skaters can, should and do change or replace a coach simply and easily without any trouble and complication. Changing a coach is not the same as "firing" an employee. News media want to use the term "FIRE" because they want to attract more readers to the news. It is neither courteous nor moral that a (former as of now) coach tends to spread bad words that can deliver significant damages to the world champion's image and reputation with leaking groundless and ambiguous facts. In fact, Yuna has been just one of his skaters he coached.  Yuna is not a professional skater. For it sounds like just a joke to me that Orser mentions bonuses, certain percentages of Yuna's income, etc. Orser, wake up. You need to grow up.

My point here is: Yuna has done nothing wrong. Orser, if you want to continue to coach Yuna and to make more money, pour your everything on Yuna. Above all, as a person, why don't you apologize to her and her family for your imprudence first?  I know that you sometimes come to Richmond Training Centre. Why don't we have a cup of coffee at Starbucks across the street? My English is not too bad, so you don't have to be concerned about miscommunication. Ask Carmen in the office for contact information of Jessie's father. You do have your future, too. Right?

토론토에 살면서 딸에게 피겨스케이트를 시키고 있습니다. (연아선수 수준은 아닙니다.) 이곳 코치들은 여러 학생들을 지도합니다. 그리고 자기가 지도한 시간을 적어두었다가 자신의 Rate를 적용해서 정확하게 청구합니다. 물론 경력있는 코치들은 인기도 좋고 Rate도 높습니다. 선수 또는 부모가 코치의 Rate에 대해 왈가불구하지 않습니다. 코치가 정하는대로 부모는 줍니다.




제 딸 코치는 남자코치인테 한시간에 60불을 청구합니다. 제 딸은 토론토 북쪽 Richmond Hill이라는 동네에 있는 Richmond Training Centre에서 배우는데, 레슨시간 이외에 댄스테스트가 있을 때 파트너해주는 시간, 시합이 있을 때 같이 가주는 시간등을 정확하게 청구합니다. 즉, 청구는 코치가 자기 Rate대로 알아서 청구하면 부모는 그대로 주는 것이 관례입니다. 선수와 코치간의 계약서? 그런 것 없습니다.




물론 연아선수와 제 딸을 비교할 수 없고, 오서코치와 제 딸 코치를 비교할 수 없지만, 오서코치가 선수로서는 유명했었지만, 코치로서는 신참이라는 점을 감안하면 시간당 오서코치가 받은 Rate는 적은 금액은 아닙니다. 그리고 연아선수와 대회에 동행할 때마다 오서코치는 당연히 그 시간을 청구했을 것입니다. 청구하지 않았다면 두가지 중 하나입니다. 오서코치가 바보이거나, 아니면 그 시간을 청구하지 않았어도 그 이상가는 혜택을 입을 수 있다는 기대 또는 확신이 있었거나 말이지요. 실제로 오서코치는 연아선수때문에 유명해졌고 CF등을 통해 많은 혜택을 입지 않았나요?




오서에게 연아선수가 갈수록 중요해지기는 했지만 - 연아선수가 잘해서 - 오서코치에게는 연아선수말고도 가르치는 선수들이 많이 있습니다. 오서코치가 이제 와서 자기는 시간당 얼마 밖에 못받고 연아선수를 지도했다, 보너스도 받은 적이 없다, 돈관계가 아니라 신뢰문제이다 등등 이야기를 하는 것은 그래서 말이 안되는 소리입니다. 비겁한 언론플레이 입니다.




일각에서는 연아선수가 오서코치를 토사구팽했다라고 하는데, 전혀 말이 안되는 소리입니다. 연아선수 혼자서 훌륭한 성적을 낸 것은 물론 아니지만, 연아선수가 아니었다면 결코 누구도 낼 수 있는 성적이 아니기때문입니다. 오서코치가 아무리 훌륭하다고 한들 제 딸을 가르쳐서 그 성적이 나게 할 수 있겠습니까? - 미안 Jessie - 연아선수와 같은 스케이팅에 대한 재능과 열정과 도전정신과 용기가 있는 선수와 함께 한 오서코치는 연아선수에게 고맙다는 말을 평생해도 모자랍니다.




오서코치가 코치경력이 짧기때문에 코치로서의 올바른 처신이 무엇인지 잘 몰라서 이런 말도 안되는 상황을 언론에 흘린다고 이해할 수도 있겠습니다. 선수는 언제든지 코치를 바꿀 수 있습니다. 코치를 바꾸는 것을 Fire, 즉 해고했다고 말하는 것은 언론에서 독자들에게 흥미를 유발시키기 위해 그렇게 쓰는 것입니다. 선수가 코치를 바꾸는데, 코치가 이런저런 사실관계가 불명확한 그리고 선수에 대해, 그것도 세계챔피언데 대해 그리 좋지 않은 이야기를 하고다니고 하는 것은 예의가 아닙니다. 자기가 연아선수에게 올-인한 것도 아니고, 연아선수가 프로선수도 아닌데, 보너스, 수입의 몇% 등을 말하는 것은 우스운 이야기입니다. 오서씨, 정신차리십시오. Brian, you need to grow up.




어쨌든 제 이야기의 포인트는, 연아선수가 잘못한 것 없습니다. 오서코치, 연아선수를 계속 지도하고 싶으면, 그리고 돈도 더 받고 싶으면 연아선수에게 더 올-인하세요. 먼저 인생의 선배답게 연아선수에게 미안하다고 사과하시구요. 가끔 Richmond Training Centre에 오시던데, 길 건너편 스타벅스에서 차나 한잔 하십시다. 저 영어 잘하니까 나중에 커뮤니케이션에 미스테이크가 있었다고 할 일은 없을 겁니다. 사무실에서 Carmen에게 Jessie 아빠 연락처 물어보면 가르쳐 줄겁니다. 당신도 미래가 있지 않습니까?
