The Observer  Tens of thousands of South Koreans yesterday rallied in Seoul against a government decision to import beef from the United States, in the largest demonstration by far in a month of almost daily protests.

수 만명의 한국인들은 어제 서울에서 미국 쇠고기를 수입하기로 한 한국정부에 반대하여 시위했고, 이는 매일 시위중 최대였다.


A crowd estimated by police at 38,000 people filled a square in front of city hall as darkness fell last night.
경찰이 집계한 3만 8천명의 사람들은 어제밤에 시청앞 광장을 가득 메웠다.

Protesters lit candles and chanted slogans criticising President Lee Myung-bak.  
시위자들은 촛불을 키고 이명박 대통령을 비난하면서 슬로건을 외쳤다.

'Dictator Lee Myung-bak,' read one placard, while another proclaimed: 'If we are anti-American, you are anti-Korean,' in a swipe at the President, who has pledged to strengthen ties with the United States.
'독재자 이명박' 프렛카드가 있고, 미국과의  유대를 강화하고자 서약한 이 대통령에 대해 다른 사람은 "우리가 반미이면, 당신은 반 한국이다"라고 비난했다.

The deal to resume beef imports has sparked fears of mad cow disease and led to protests calling for the scrapping or renegotiation of the agreement.
쇠고기 수입재개 딜은 광우병 공포를 야기했고, 이는 수입 합의의 재협상이나 무효를 외치는 시위를 가져왔다.


South Korea agreed in April to reopen what was formerly the third-largest overseas market for US beef.
한국은 미국 소고기 해외 시장의 세 번째로 크게 공식적으로 재 개방 하기로 4월달에 합의했다.

It had been shut for most of the past four and a half years following the first US case of mad cow disease in a Canadian-born cow in Washington state in 2003.

The beef issue has emerged as the biggest domestic challenge for Lee's administration since the former construction industry chief executive took office on 25 February pledging to boost the economy.
쇠고기 문제는 이명박 정부 출범이후로 국내 최대 도전이다. 이 대통령은 경제를 일으키기 위헌 공약으로 2월 25일에 전직 건설회사 회장으로 정권을 잡았다.


  Although his margin of victory in the December election was the largest ever in South Korea, Lee's handling of the beef agreement has seen his popularity plummet to levels near 20 per cent.
비록 지난 12월 선거에서 성공이 한국에서 가장 컸지만, 쇠고기 합의는 그의 인기도를 거의 20 %가까이 떨어트린 것으로 보인다.
