  미국시민들은 한국정부의 광우병 위험을 가진 미 쇠고기 수입결정에 반대하는 한국인들을 전적으로 지지하는 바이다. :



l        미 쇠고기는 미국과 해외의 소비자들의 건강을 위협한다.

l        한국의 미 쇠고기 완전개방은 미 축산업계만 쌀 찌게 할 뿐이다.

l        한국정부와 미국 정부는 국민 보건을 위해 미 쇠고기 수입 재협상을 하라.



미국시민으로써, 우리는 미 쇠고기의 광우병 잠재위험에 대해 우려하고 있으며, 한국 어린이들, 학생들, 부모들, 노인들, 노동자들, 교사들, 모든 계층의 사람들이 최근의 미 쇠고기 협상에 반대하는 촛불집회에 참여하는 것에 대해 매우 경의를 표한다.  



미 쇠고기는 안전하지 않습니다. 광우병이 실제로 발발한 걸로 확인된 몇몇 국가들 중에서, 미국은 동물사료 사용을 허용하고, 혼합유와 소피를 송아지에게 먹이도록 하는 유일한 나라입니다. 지금까지 미국 광우병 의학 전문가들은 대중들에게 미국에서는 광우병 위험으로부터 국민들을 보호해줄 규제가 미흡하다고 계속해서 경고하고 있습니다.  현재의 도축과 가공 관행하에서는, 미쇠고기는 최고의 광우병 위험을 내포하고 있을 수도 있습니다. 광우병은 미전역의 시민들이 조직적으로 맞서 싸우고 있는 질병입니다.    





지난 2월, 학교 급식프로그램의 주요 공급업체 중 한 회사인, Westland Hallmark 사가 역사상 가장 큰 규모인 총 64350 톤의 쇠고기를 리콜 조치한 적이 있었습니다. 우리 가족과 사회의 건강을 깊이 염려하는 소비자들로서, 우리는 미 정부와 축산업계가 미국내에서 안전하지 못한 쇠고기 생산 관행으로부터 시민들의 건강을 보호함에 있어 미온적인 태도를 보여왔다고 확실히 말씀드릴 수 있습니다.  따라서, 우리 미국 민들은 연령 제한을 풀고, 광우병 위험이 매우 높은 걸로 알려진 내장과 뼈를 포함한 쇠고기 모든 부위를 수입함으로써, 그렇지 않아도 허술하고 불만족스런 미 쇠고기 산업관련 규제들을 약화시키게 될 한국 정부의 최근의 수입결정에 대해 한국인들만큼이나 우려하고 있습니다.  한국은 2003년 광우병 발발 이후로 이윤감소를 겪고 있는 미 Tyson Food 사와 Cargill 사의 3번째로 큰 쇠고기 수입국입니다. 점점 많은 미국인들이 쇠고기 섭취를 매우 꺼리기 때문에, 미 축산업계가 새로운 이윤을 찾기 위한 새로운 시장을 필요로 하는 이유는 새삼 설명할 필요가 없겠습니다.



국제적인 관점에서 볼 때, 미국쇠고기가 인간 식용으로 안전하다라는 맹목적인 가정하에 미 쇠고기를 수입하기로 한 한국정부의 결정은 한국인들뿐만 아니라, 한국 가공식품을 섭취하는 전세계 사람들에게도 위협적입니다. 많은 미국인들이 한국으로부터 수입된 식품들을 즐겨먹고 있 때문에, 우리 모든 미국인들 역시 축산업계만 살찌우게 하며, 식용으로 안전하지 않다고 여기는  미 쇠고기를 함유하고 있는 식품들을 섭취할 수 밖에 없습니다.  또한, 미국 쇠고기를 수입하게 될 다른 나라들에게도 끔찍한 선례를 남기게 될 것입니다.  현 세계의 푸드 시스템은 전 세계인들이 서로의 건강과 사회를 보호하기 위해 함께 노력해야 한다는 사실을 주지시켜주고 있습니다.    



한국인들과 공동으로 우리 미국시민들은 다음 사항을 요구한다:

l 미정부는 축산업계의 이윤을 보호하기보다는 비인간적이고 안전하지 못한 미 축산업계의 관행을 폐지시킴으로써 광우병으로부터 미국인들과 전세계인들의 건강을 보호해주기를 촉구한다.



l        한국을 포함한 다른 국가들로의 쇠고기 수출을 재협상할 것을 정부에 촉구한다.  

광우병 위험과 비인간적이고, 건강하지 못한 축산업계의 관행이 만족할 만한 수준으로 시정된후에만 쇠고기 협상을 하기를 촉구한다.



l        전체 한국민들의 82%가 한국정부가 미국과의 쇠고기 재협상을 요구하고 있다. 한국전역에 걸쳐 수천명의 사람들이 거리에 나가 촛불집회를 열어 식품안전에 대해 우려를 표명하고 있다.  한국정부는 “미친소 정책” 을 중단하고, 평화적 촛불시위에 참여한 모든 사람들에게 언론의 자유를 보장하라!.  



  l        미국정부와 한국 정부는 이 상황을 해결하기 위해 재협상을 시작함으로써 이전의 협상을 파기하여 국민들의 의지를 존중해주기를 바란다.



























STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY

US citizens are in full support of Koreans who oppose the government's decision to import! US beef that have a potential risk of the Mad Cow Disease:




  




l        US beef poses a health threat to consumers in the US and abroad




l        Complete liberalizations of beef in Korea will on-ly benefit US beef industries




l        Governments of Korea and US must re-negotiate the US beef trade agreement to safeguard public health






  


As citizens of the United States, we are concerned about the potential risk of Mad Disease in the US beef and highly commend the conscious decisions of the Korean children, students, parents, elders, workers, teachers and people from all walks of life for participating in mass candlelight vigils to oppose the recent Korea-US trade negotiation concerning the US beef import!.






  


US beef is not safe.  Among the few countries that are identified with the actual cases of mad cow disease, United States is the on-ly country that continues to allow animal feed and weaning of calves on mixed milk and cattle blood.  To date, American medical experts of mad cow disease continue to warn the public about the lack of regulations in the US to protect public from the risk of mad cow disease.  Under the current meat slaughtering and processing practices, US beef may carry t
highest risk of mad cow disease, for which citizens across the US have been organizing and fighting against.  






  


Last February, Westland-Hallmark Meat, on-e of the major distributor of school lunches had the biggest recall of US beef in history for a total of 64,350 tons.  As consumers who deeply care about the-health of our families and communities, we can verify that both the US government and beef industry have not demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting our health from unsafe practice of beef production in this country.  Thus, we are equally concerned about the Korean government's recent decision to weaken the already low and unsatisfactory regulations governing the US meat industry by allowing no age limit on beef import! and import!ing beef of all parts—including intestines and bones that are known to have the highest risk of mad disease.   Korea is the 3rd largest import!er of beef from US Tyson Food and Cargill that have experienced slow profit since the outbreak of mad cow disease in 2003.  With a growing number of Americans taking high precautions against beef consumption, it is not difficult to see why a new market is necessary for beef industry to reap profit from.  






  


From the global perspective, the Korean government's decision to import! US beef under the blind assumption that it is safe for human consumption poses threat not on-ly to people in Korea but to people around the globe who consume Korean food products.  As many Americans enjoy food products import!ed from Korea all of us will be forced to eat food that contain US beef that we feel are unsafe to consume and on-ly benefit beef industry.  It will also set a horrible precedent for other countries to follow.  The current global food system is a reminder that people around the globe must work together to protect each other's health and communities.  






  


In solidarity with the people of Korea we demand the following:  




l        We urge our government to protect the-health of Americans and people around the globe from mad cow disease by shutting down inhumane and unsafe practices of the US beef industry  instead of protecting their profits.  




l        We urge our government to re-negotiate the beef export to other countries, including Korea.  Trade negotiations must be made on-ly after the risk of mad cow disease and the inhumane and unhealthy practice of beef industry are satisfactorily addressed and resolved.




l        82% of all people in South Korea are urging its government to re-negotiate the beef import! with the US. Thousands of people are flooding into the streets all throughout the country to hold mass candlelight vigils to express their concerns about food safety. South Korean government must stop its "mad cow policy" and guarantee the freedom of speech for all people engaged in peaceful candlelight vigils in Korea.




l        United States and Korean government must recall the agreement and uphold the will of people by entering into a re-negotiation to resolve this situation.
