대단히 보람 있는 추억이 될 것으로 확신합니다.
왜냐하면, 대한민국 촛불혁명은
전 세계에서 가장 평화롭고
가장 질서있는 시민혁명으로
역사에 기록될 것이기 때문입니다.
가장 창의적이고 가장 품격있는 새로운 혁명입니다.
장장 50일이 넘는 시간동안
연인원 천만 명이 참가한 세계역사상 최대규모 집회에서
단 한 건의 폭력도 단 한 명의 체포자도 없었습니다.
어른과 아이들이 함께하는 축제처럼 아름다운 집회였습니다.
역사상 모든 혁명은,
새로운 세상을 염원하는 높은 이상에도 불구하고
폭력과 희생이 따랐습니다.
하지만 대한민국의 촛불혁명은
평화와 질서와 품격을 지키고도
세상을 바꿀 수 있다는 것을 보여줬습니다.
폭력보다 평화의 힘이
세상을 더 크게 바꿀 수 있다는 진리를 증명하고 있습니다.
한국 국민들이 든 촛불은
한국의 헌법과 민주주의를 지켜낸 것은 물론
전쟁과 갈등으로 점철된 지구촌에 평화의 메시지가 될 것입니다.
촛불혁명은 전 세계 시민들에게 평화혁명의 교과서가 될 것입니다.
여러분,
대한민국을 걱정하지 마십시오.
한국은 가장 짧은 기간에
산업화와 민주화를 함께 이룬 나라입니다.
또한 우리는 위기를 기회로 바꿔온 민족입니다.
우리 국민의 저력은 촛불혁명을,
완전히 새로운 대한민국으로 가는
출발점으로 삼을 것입니다.
대한민국 안보와 경제도 걱정하지 마십시오.
안보와 경제는 민주주의와 함께 발전하는 법입니다.
촛불혁명이 만들어 낼 더 나은 민주주의가
더 튼튼한 안보와 경제를 만들 것입니다.
혹시라도 북한이 지금의 상황을 오판하여
무모한 도발을 해온다면 우리 국민이 용납하지 않을 것입니다.

"Korea's candlelight rally is one of history's greatest people's revolutions."
It is my pleasure to be here before journalists from around the world today.
Korea is at a moment of major transformation. And I am well aware that it can be a strenuous effort when covering the news here.
Our country is currently in the middle of a revolution. A pivotal moment of change. You could call it the ‘Candlelight Revolution’. As professional journalists, rest assured that you are covering a watershed period in Korea’s history.
Why? Korea’s ‘Candlelight Revolution’ will be recorded in history as one of the world’s most peaceful and orderly citizen-led political transformation. It was creative and dignified. It was a whole new way of implementing a political change.
For close to 50 days, millions of people participated in the rally. It was the single largest rally in the history of mankind. What surprises me even more is the fact that there were no casualties or any arrests. Boys and girls, men and women, adults and children were all part of the ‘Candlelight Revolution’. Oftentimes, it resembled more of a festival than a political protest.
Throughout history, revolutions with even the highest ideals and loftiest calls for a new world often had to entail violence and sacrifice. However, the ‘Candlelight Revolution’ has become a model that shows the world that change can come through order and peaceful means.
The ‘Candlelight Revolution’ has proven this one simple truth: “peace” may be more powerful than “violence.” Korea’s democracy and constitution were protected by the candles held by the Korean people. It was a powerful message sent by our nation’s citizens to the rest of the world. The ‘Candlelight Revolution’ will be a global hallmark message of peace, especially to those in areas where conflicts and regional wars persist.
Dear international correspondents,
I am well aware that the international community is concerned about Korea’s political situation. However, Korea is a nation that was able to achieve both democratization and industrialization at the same time in a short period. I want to tell you that the international community need not be concerned. Even with the political change under way, our way of life has not been disturbed. Furthermore, Korean people have always been successful in transforming “threats” into “opportunities.” We will surely transform the energy that was shown during the ‘Candlelight Revolution’ into a stepping stone to Korea’s next evolution.
I also want to mention that you do not need to worry about Korea’s national security or national economy. Our national security and national economy moves forward with the progress of democracy. The mandate of the ‘Candlelight Revolution’ gives us fresh opportunity to develop a more robust democratic nation, strengthen our security and create a healthier economy.
If North Korea miscalculates the current situation and initiates any threat, the South Korean people will not tolerate it and will fight to the end. I, myself, will stand at the very front of the battle line.
And in fact, this would be a great opportunity for international investors to expand their investments in Korea. I can confidently say, “This is indeed the time to place your bets on Korea.”
